This is a whimsey inspired by the stamped cicada which I did while playing around with stamps in general. Why this particular inspiration? Who knows – but I had a lot of fun doing it. It will be shown at the Artists Association .
So, what is my inspiration? It is different things at different times – and that can be good, but it can also be bad. Too much inspiration and I can easily get scattered. There are many things that I enjoy – color, movement (hence the wires in this piece that will tremble in a breeze). Movement and color are also what I enjoy about textile.
These days, however, I find myself asking, ‘On what do I want to focus? Do I want to focus or do I want to play for awhile? And would playing help me determine where I want to put my focus?’
We tend to be dismissive of play as adults in our society – or we organize it to death. I am beginning to relearn play with my artwork and I think that may be helpful for me at this time. But – time will tell!
In other areas, music inspires me, as well as words. I am very moved by poetry, so much so that I have to taste it sparingly. I often listen to meditation music while working on some pieces that require a lot of concentration. Jazz or Caribbean music is great for doing whimsies!
